Kuthiramalika (Puthenmalika) Palace Museum

This palace was built by Maharaja Swathi Thirunal Balarama Varma – the King of Travancore, who was a great poet, musician, social reformer and statesman. This rare specimen of workmanship in the traditional Travancore style of architecture has exquisite wood carvings. The palace museum displays paintings and various collections of the royal family and is located near the Padmanabha Swami Temple. Officially the Kuthiramalika in known as “Puthenmalika” which means new mansion. It was built contemporary to the architecture of the epoch with admirable perfection.

The palace Kuthiramalika gets its very name from the fact that 122 horses are carved on the wooden wall brackets that support the southern roof of the palace itself. This palace is known for its superb wood carvings, paintings and various royal collections. It gives us the information about the style and fashion of architecture of the middle nineteenth century. Swathi Sangeethotsavam, the musical festival is conducted from 6 to 12 January every year for the lovers of both Karnatic and Hindustani music.

The beauty of the palace has attracted many film directors for better and suitable location. The maintained natural beauty of the palace is something great.

Due to the great respect given to Swathi Thirunal the building was left unoccupied for more than a century after his death. All over it will be an unforgettable experience to be to the Kuthiramalika.
